The National Democratic Congress (NDC) is resolute in its bid to win the upcoming Akwatia by-election.

Tanko Rashid-Computer, the Deputy Director of Elections and IT for the NDC, has said that the party will go all out to take the seat to honour the memory of the late Dr Edward Omane Boamah, Ghana's late Defence Minister, who tragically lost his life in a helicopter crash on August 6, 2025.

Speaking to Joy News from the funeral ground of the six victims of the tragic helicopter crash, Rashid-Computer, who is also the CEO of Ghana Investment Fund for Electronic Communications (GIFEC), said Dr Boamah had been instrumental in shaping the NDC's electoral strategies.

He further described the late minister as a master planner and a key figure in the NDC's electoral successes and admitted that it would be difficult for the NDC to fill in the void he had left behind.

Consequently, the GIFEC boss urged his party to finish what the late Dr Boamah started regarding strategies for the Akwatia by-election.

The by-election, slated for September 2, 2025, was necessitated by the death of the late Ernest Yaw Kumi, the former MP.

Although the party has temporarily halted discussions on the by-election due to the helicopter crash, Rashid-Computer said he believed that winning the election would be a fitting tribute to Dr Omane Boamah, who was also the NDC's Director of Elections and IT.

"To lose such a gem is touching. It hit us hard, and that is why we are going to Akwatia because he was passionate about it. That very morning (the day the accident happened), we had a meeting with him, and he gave us strategy. We were going to implement the strategy and report to him in the evening, only to be hit by the tragic news in the afternoon. It will be in the right place for us to go and win the election in his glory. To let him know that what he wanted, we have actually achieved it for him," he said.

Rashid-Computer also recalled their last conversation on the morning of the crash, where they discussed strategies for the Akwatia by-election.

He further praised Dr Omane Boamah's intellect, versatility, and dedication to the party.

"The strategies that we used for the elections, Dr Omane Boamah designed them, but he's no longer with us. So, we have to take the pieces and put it together and make sure that his legacy lives on. That's the only thing we have. He left a huge legacy, especially the 'Activate the body cameras' for the elections directorate. We will continue to use it. It's a code, and he gave us the tools to decode it, which helped us a lot," he disclosed.
"So, we will use it as a significant legacy to continue to build a robust election directorate, a winning machinery for the NDC, so that his name will be etched onto the metallic systems that we are designing for the party," he added.
