The National Chairman of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketia, has spoken out about the day party Vice Chairman Samuel Sarpong died.

Samuel Sarpong was one of eight individuals killed in a helicopter crash on Wednesday, August 6, 2025.

The group, consisting of five high-ranking government officials and three air force officers, was aboard a Ghana Armed Forces Z-9 helicopter travelling from Accra to Obuasi.

The helicopter crashed into the dense Sikaman Forest, killing all eight people on board.

Aside from Sarpong, who was a former Ashanti Regional Minister, other high-ranking officials, including Defence Minister Edward Omane Boamah, Environment Minister Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, and Deputy National Security Coordinator Limuna Muniru, died in the crash.

Samuel Sarpong’s reported last words surface

In the aftermath of the helicopter tragedy, Onua FM journalist JB spoke about his final conversation with Dr Samuel Sarpong.

He claimed that the politician was unhappy over not receiving an appointment from the President, John Dramani Mahama.

JB said he asked him about when he would receive an appointment in light of the job he did in helping the party to regain power, to which he allegedly replied that he did not know what else the President expected of him before giving him an appointment.

The journalist claimed that Samuel Sarpong said, “I don’t even understand Mahama. Is he waiting for me to die before honouring me?”

Asiedu Nketia speaks about Samuel Sarpong’s appointment

After the veteran politician’s death, the National Chairman of the NDC, Johnson Asiedu Nketia, led a party delegation to visit his home.

Asiedu Nketia wept over the loss of his vice chairman, whom he conceded he had directed to attend the Obuasi event in his place.

He also said that the President had finally decided to hand Sarpong an appointment as the Board Chairman of the Cocoa Processing Company.

According to Nketia, who is popularly known as General Mosquito, he informed Sarpong about the decision on Tuesday, August 5, the day before the crash.

He said Sarpong’s appointment letter was to be handed to him on Wednesday, August 6, the day of the crash and his subsequent death.

Samuel Sarpong mourned by widow

Previously, YEN.com.gh reported that Samuel Sarpong’s widow, Akyaa, mourned him at his home after his death.
