A video of President John Mahama aboard a Ghana Air Force helicopter has surfaced in the aftermath of the tragic crash near Obuasi that killed eight people.

Ghana endured a day of tragedy on Wednesday, August 6, 2025, when five high-ranking government officials and three military officials perished in a helicopter crash.
The group were headed to the Black Park near the Len Clay Sports Stadium in Obuasi for the launch of the Responsible Cooperative Mining and Skills Development Programme (rCOMSDEP) programme.

The programme was the latest initiative in Ghana’s fight against illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey.
Shortly after taking off from Accra, however, the helicopter disappeared from radar.
It was later discovered to have crashed into the Sikaman Forest in the Adansi Akuofrom District of the Ashanti Region, killing all eight people on board.
Chief of Staff Julius Debrah formally identified the victims as Defence Minister, Dr Edward Kofi Omane Boamah, Minister for Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation, Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, Deputy National Security Coordinator Limuna Muniru, former Ashanti Regional Minister Dr Samuel Sarpong, and former parliamentary candidate for Obuasi East, Samuel Aboagye.
The military casualties were also identified as Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, Flying Officer Manaen Twum-Ampadu, and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah.
President John Dramani Mahama was reportedly initially scheduled to attend the event but was unable to due to a scheduling conflict.

President Mahama flies aboard Air Force helicopter
Following the tragedy, footage has surfaced showing the President, John Dramani Mahama, aboard an Air Force helicopter.
The video, shared on TikTok on July 26, about two weeks before the crash, showed the helicopter preparing to land at a park in the Oti Region.
The chopper arrived from the air, hovered for a few moments, and then safely landed.

President Mahama could be seen disembarking from the flight in the company of other dignitaries, including NDC General Secretary, Fiifi Fiavi Kwetey.
The President was headed to the region for the Oti Regional leg of his national thank-you tour following his victory in the 2024 elections.

Muntaka Mubarak weeps after helicopter crash
