Edward Kofi Omane Boamah, born and raised in Koforidua Effiduase, Ghana, levelled up from humble beginnings to eventually serve as a government minister.

Dr Omane Boamah, who was a General Science student, was known as an intelligent student at Pope John Senior High School (POJOSS).
He studied medicine at the University of Ghana Medical School and later earned a master’s degree in Health Policy from the London School of Economics.
In 2001, Omane Boamah served on the medical rescue team during the Accra Sports Stadium disaster, a football match between Asante Kotoko and Accra Hearts of Oak that led to the casualties.
He also volunteered with the World Health Organisation (WHO) in 2004.

Dr Omane Boamah: his rise and demise
Dr Omane Boamah, serving as a student leader, served as the President of the National Union of Ghana Students.
His political journey kicked off under President John Atta Mills when he was appointed as Deputy Minister for Environment, Science, and Technology, advocating against environmental violations, which led to a nationwide tree-planting initiative.
By 2012, Omane Boamah had served as the Deputy Minister for Youth and Sports, coordinating Ghana’s 2013 Africa Cup of Nations participation.
He earned his first main ministerial role as Minister for Communications in 2013, spearheading digital safety, creating the National Computer Emergency Response Team, and advocating for child online protection.
Omane Boamah returned to the medical field as a physician at Afrah International Hospital after the National Democratic Congress' 2016 election defeat.

In 2025, as Minister for Defence under John Mahama, he focused on military welfare and anti-illegal mining efforts, reflecting his commitment to national progress.
He was set to release a book titled A Peaceful Man in an African Democracy, honouring honoring John Atta Mills, before the Ghanaian statesman passed away.
Omane Boamah mourned after Obuasi helicopter crash
On August 6, 2025, Omane Boamah died in a military helicopter crash in the Adansi Akrofuom District, with seven others, while flying to an anti-galamsey event in Obuasi.
Koforidua, Effiduase has mourned deeply, with loved ones and sympathisers gathering at his family home, grieving a son who never forgot his origins.
The late politician is survived by his wife, Rita, and their two daughters and one son.
Murtala Muhammed remembered after passing in crash
Earlier, YEN.com.gh reported that Murtala Muhammed, who perished in the same helicopter tragedy, rose from a humble background to earn degrees from Tamale College of Education, the University of Ghana, and KNUST.
He served in various ministerial roles and was admired for his advocacy on anti-corruption, environmental issues, and grassroots development. He was buried on August 10 with full state honours at the Military Cemetery.
