Ghana Helicopter Crash: Chiefs and Residents of Kwahu Obomeng Mourn the Demise of Dr Omane Boamah

The town of Kwahu Obomeng has been shrouded in grief following the tragic death of its illustrious son, Defence Minister Dr Edward Omane Boamah, in a helicopter crash on August 6, 2025.

The 51-year-old politician was among the eight individuals who lost their lives when a Ghana Armed Forces Z-9 helicopter crashed in the Adansi Akrofuom District of the Ashanti Region.

Residents of Kwahu Obomeng, Dr Boamah's hometown, have been struggling to come to terms with the sudden loss of their beloved native son.

In a video circulating on social media, the chiefs and indigenes of Kwahu Obomeng were seen wailing over the demise of their son and brother.

Speaking to UTV Ghana, one of the chiefs said Dr Boamah's death had dealt a heavy blow to them. He said they had high hopes for him following his appointment as Ghana's Defence Minister by President John Mahama.

The chief added that they were looking forward to him helping by using his influence to bring development and progress to Kwahu Obomeng, particularly in the area of employment opportunities for the teeming youth in the town.

"This is truly devastating. We are struggling to come to terms with it. He's one of the natives of this town that we take pride in. He was only recently appointed as a minister, and we were hoping he would help the youth get jobs. We are saddened by the news of his demise. He only left home to serve his country," he said.
"We were shaken by the news of his demise, we don't even know what to say. We are only waiting to hear what the government will do," another chief stated.

Also reacting to the news of Dr Omane Boamah's demise, a female resident of the Kwahu Obomeng town described the incident as heartbreaking and difficult to accept.

"When we heard that Dr Omane Boamah had passed away, everybody was sad. This is heartbreaking and I'm still struggling to believe it," she said, describing the news as a cruel blow for the community.

The town's grief has been palpable, with many other residents of Kwahu Obemeng describing Dr Boamah as a humble and impactful leader who never lost touch with his roots.

Reacting to this in a discussion with YEN.com.gh, Apostle Eric Okai, senior pastor at the Elim Church in Accra, advised the chiefs and residents of Kwahu Obomeng to find solace in prayer and community support during this difficult time.

He suggested they hold memorial services to honor Dr. Boamah's legacy, support his family and those affected by the tragedy, reflect on the positive impact he had on their community, and continue his good works and initiatives.

"My advice to the chiefs and residents of Kwahu Obomeng is to find solace in prayer and community support during this difficult time. Grief is a natural process, and it's essential to allow yourselves to feel the emotions that come with losing a beloved leader," he said.
"I would encourage you to hold memorial services to honor Dr. Boamah's legacy, support his family and those affected by the tragedy, reflect on the positive impact he had on your community, and continue his good works and initiatives. May God grant you peace, comfort, and guidance," he added.

A brief profile of Dr Omane Boamah

Born in 1974, Dr Omane Boamah, the only child of his mother, was a medical doctor by profession. He previously served as Ghana's Minister for Communication between 2013 and 2017 during President Mahama's first term in office.

Between 2012 and 2013, he served as Deputy Minister of Youth and Sports. Prior to assuming that role, he was the Deputy Minister for Environment, Science and Technology from 2009 to 2012, under the late President John Evans Atta Mills.

For his academic background, Dr Boamah was an alumnus of Pope John Senior High School and Minor Seminary in Koforidua, University of Ghana Medical School, Washington University School of Medicine in St Louis, Missouri, USA, London School of Economics, and London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine.

Bodies of victims of helicopter crash retrieved

Meanwhile, YEN.com.gh reported earlier that the mortal remains of the eight people who lost their lives in the tragic Obuasi helicopter crash were retrieved by the rescue team of the Ghana Armed Forces.

The deceased included Defence Minister, Dr Edward Omane Boamah; the Minister of Environment, Science and Technology, Ibrahim Muntala Mohammed; and several others who were confirmed dead.
