  • The NPP executive also accused the EC of undermining the will of the people by ordering a rerun

The New Patriotic Party has said it will not take part in the partial rerun of the Ablekuma North Constituency election.

The party insisted on July 8 that its candidate, Nana Akua Afriyie, rightfully won the 2024 election.

General Secretary of the NPP Justin Frimpong Kodua told the press that the Electoral Commission's plan for a rerun at 19 polling centres on July 11 was unjust.

“For us in the New Patriotic Party (NPP), we are resolute and know that our candidate, Nana Akua Afriyie, won the elections with a margin of 414 votes. This is based on facts and figures."

“Under no circumstances will we go for a rerun. We will not go for any rerun. The New Patriotic Party will not go for any rerun. We have won the elections.:

Kodua said the commission needed to finish the original collation of the election results. The constituency has 281 polling stations in all.

The other main contender in the race is Ewurabena Aubyn of the National Democratic Congress.

The rerun had become necessary following a prolonged dispute between the NDC and the NPP over the credibility of results from the December 7, 2024, general election.

The NDC was unhappy with the use of scanned pink sheets from the 37 polling stations.

It claimed the pink sheets were brought under suspicious circumstances by the NPP and were also not verified.

The NPP, however, argued that the scanned pink sheets were verified and endorsed by party agents before the chaos at the collation centre derailed the process. The NPP believes only three polling stations were in dispute.

Legal action against Ablekuma North rerun

Afriyie has sued at the High Court seeking to quash the Electoral Commission’s decision to re-run elections in 19 out of 281 polling stations.

In her suit, she argued that there is a pending High Court order directing the commission to collate and declare the results of the elections in the constituency.

She believes this is an administrative error by failing to comply with the court’s order, in the absence of any directive to the contrary.

“The EC acted in excess of jurisdiction when it decided to re-run 19 out of the 281 polling stations in the Ablekuma North Constituency in the absence of any court order varying, vacating and/or overturning a subsisting High Court judgment dated January 4, 2025."
