The mother of Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah, a victim of the tragic helicopter crash near Obuasi, has broken her silence on her son's demise.

In a recent interview with NDA Media, the deceased military officer's mother shared that she spoke with her son before the unfortunate incident, where he informed her about his impending trip to Obuasi.

The late Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah's mother noted that she did not feel at ease on the day of the unfortunate incident and received the news of her son's passing while watching TV at home.

Late military sergeant's mother discusses his death

She noted that her late son had been stationed at an Army base in Takoradi and only came to Accra when he and another colleague transported someone to the capital. She said her son later stayed behind for the trip to Obuasi.

The mother, based in Kumasi, noted that her son's job required him to travel to several bases across the country and that she only met him for the first time in a while during his wedding ceremony in Cape Coast.

She noted that the late Sergeant Addo Mensah could not even go on a Thanksgiving tour after his wedding, since he was only given two weeks for the ceremony.

The late military officer's mother stated that her late son only stayed a week with his wife when they went on a honeymoon after their wedding. She said her son's wife shed uncontrollable tears during her husband's departure.

"He only got to stay with his wife for a week after they got married. It was just a week that he took his wife to his station. The lady is a teacher. My son was also in Takoradi. They only went on a honeymoon for one week."

Sergeant Addo Mensah's mother also spoke about her late son, whom she described as a respectful man who did home chores and promised to purchase a new car for her after scratching hers.

She noted that she has still not seen the images of her son's remains being transported from the helicopter crash site in a jute bag and has stayed off social media and TV since the unfortunate incident.

The military officer's mother shared that her son had been an engineer in the Ghana Armed Forces for over 14 years and had completed his training in 2011.

Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah's mother also recounted some of her son's challenges throughout his career in the Ghana Armed Forces.

The military officer's mother also noted that her late son had secured a 5-year US visa since 2024, and was planning to quit the GAF and travel for greener pastures.

"My son had a 5-year US visa. He was supposed to travel in December. He got his visa last year. I told him to quit his job and go and work abroad, so people will refer to me as the mother of a borga.
"He told me he will travel after his wedding. We were planning to contribute money for him to purchase a plane ticket, quit his job, and travel. The visa is still there. I have a picture of it on my phone."

She also shared an update on her son's widow, whom she said was doing well and was praying to God.

Sergeant Addo Mensah's mother stated that she was praying for God's strength to help the widow deal with the loss of her husband since she was very young.

She noted that her daughter-in-law's father was also a pastor in the Methodist church, who officiated the wedding ceremony on her late son's 37th birthday on July 5, 2025.

Ernest Addo passes away in helicopter crash

Sergeant Ernest Addo was among the eight individuals who tragically lost their lives in the helicopter crash that happened at the Sikaman Forest in the Adansi South District in the Ashanti Region.

The military officer and his colleagues, Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala and Flying Officer Manin Twum-Ampadu, were accompanying five government officials to the official launch of the Responsible Cooperative Mining and Skills Development Programme (rCOMSDEP) in Obuasi.

The Minister of Defence, Dr Edward Omane Boamah, and the Environment Minister, Dr Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, were on board the Z-9 helicopter when the tragic crash happened.

The Deputy National Security Coordinator, Limuna Muniru, a Vice Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Dr Samuel Sarpong, and a former Parliamentary Candidate for Obuasi East, Samuel Aboagye, who was also on board, did not survive the unfortunate incident.

Sergeant's brother breaks silence on his death

Earlier, YEN.com.gh reported that Sergeant Addo Mensah's brother spoke about his sibling's tragic passing in a helicopter crash.

In an interview, Turkson Acheampong recounted how he and his mother received the news and how this had affected their family.

Sergeant Addo Mensah's brother's remarks garnered sad reactions from many Ghanaians on social media.
