Eighteen other students have also been handed various sanctions, ranging from one-semester suspension to cancellation of papers.

Offences committed by the sanctioned students, according to a source, include smuggling foreign materials such as mobile phones into the exam halls. Others were also caught ‘sharing’ answers.

The university's action sends a clear message about its zero-tolerance policy towards academic dishonesty.

In a statement, the university made it clear that rusticated students must comply strictly with the terms of their sanction.

“The students who have been rusticated are advised to totally vacate the University Campus and should not interfere in any activity of the University during the stipulated period of sanction,” the school stated.

To enforce this, the Head of Security, Heads of Department, and Heads of Hall have all been explicitly informed and entreated to ensure that the students do not participate in any academic activity on campus until they have fully served their suspension period.

“This firm action serves as a strong deterrent, reinforcing the university's commitment to maintaining a fair and honest academic environment,” the school stated, advising other students to “...desist from engaging in any form of examination malpractice to avoid sanctions.”

At UG, over 100 students were sanctioned for exams malpractice, including 14 students who were handed one-year suspensions. This happened in mid-June this year.

Sanctions issued in a notice from the Office of the Registrar dated 16 June 2025 include suspensions, expulsions, grade penalties, and formal reprimands.

They are categorised under two broad areas: general misconduct and examination-related offences.

Fourteen students, among them Mr Abdul-Yakini Lukman and Mr Daniel Ansah, were suspended for two academic years, 2023/2024 and 2024/2025, for disorderly behaviour and disobeying university authority, in line with Statutes 42(1)(a) of the University of Ghana Statutes 2011.
