GAF Helicopter Crash: How Murtala Muhammed Cancelled His Scheduled Flight to Join Crashed Aircraft

The Minister for Environment, Science, Innovation and Technology was not supposed to be on the Ghana Armed Forces Flight that crashed on August 6, 2025, according to the Ashanti Regional Minister.
Dr Frank Amoakohene, speaking to the press, stated that Dr Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed was supposed to use a different flight, but made a last-minute decision that ultimately claimed his life.

According to him, he had already booked a flight to Kumasi but changed his mind and decided to go with the Defence Minister's delegation.
This was initially unveiled by top Ghanaian broadcaster, Saddick Adams, popularly known as Sports Obama, on Angel FM's Morning Show.
He said the Minister had booked a commercial flight and even a vehicle that would convey him to the event's venue, but changed his mind that morning.

Eight perish in GAF helicopter crash
Eight people, including two prominent government personalities, were the victims of a Ghana Armed Forces helicopter crash which occurred on August 6, 2025.
The high-ranking politicians were the Minister of Defence, Dr Edward Omane Boamah, and the Minister for Environment, Science, and Technology, Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed.
Aside from these, the Deputy National Security Coordinator, Limuna Muniru, former Ashanti Regional Minister Dr Samuel Sarpong, and former legislator Samuel Aboagye, were involved in the crash.

Three army personnel, namely Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, Flying Officer Manin Twum-Ampadu, and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah, were also on board when the aircraft crashed.

It has emerged that at least five people were supposed to have been on the flight but missed it due to other engagements.
The first name that popped up was the President John Mahama, who was due to be the guest speaker for the event; however, he reportedly changed his mind in the morning and sent a representative.
Secondly, Muntaka Mohammed Mubarak, the Asawase MP, was also supposed to be on the flight but was saved by Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, who insisted they had an important meeting that morning and dragged him away.
Other NDC bigwigs, including Elvis Afriyie Ankrah and Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, were reportedly also supposed to be on the flight but missed it due to other engagements.
Murtala Muhammed's helicopter decision breaks hearts
The video of Saddick Adams speaking about how Murtala Muhammed joined the flight at the last minute broke the hearts of many. Netizens who saw the post were deeply moved.

Grieving Queen Mother resists interview after crash
Earlier, YEN.com.gh reported that Queen Mother of Koforidua Effiduase, Nana Krobea Asantewaa I, was moved to tears after the death of Dr Omane Boamah was announced.
The woman, who had strong ties with the late Defence Minister, grieved openly at the residence of the family as news of the Obuasi helicopter crash caused national sorrow.
