90 per cent houses built by individuals
A new report by the Institute of Statistical, Social and Economic Research (ISSER) has concluded that the country’s housing sector is dominated by homeowners who build their houses instead of big construction companies.
The report, which was made public on July 15, stated that 90 per cent of the 45,000 new houses built every year are constructed by individuals or families.
The report by the Institute, however, expressed concern that not much research or government policy has been done in this area, hence appealing to policymakers and key stakeholders to focus their efforts on addressing the challenges associated with self-built housing.
In offering policy recommendations, the report called for improved land access and management through joint efforts between municipal assemblies, state land agencies, and traditional authorities.
The report also admonished municipal assemblies to reevaluate how land is used and planned, as stated in the National Urban Policy Framework and Action Plan, 2012, and the Land Use and Spatial Planning Act, 2016 (Act 925).
Ghanaians urged to prioritise self-built houses
A Senior Lecturer at the Institute of Statistical, Social and Economic Research (ISSER), University of Ghana, Professor George Owusu, also stressed the need for the government to support self-built housing.
Speaking at a workshop in May, Professor George Owusu explained that this could help reduce Ghana’s housing deficit.
