Officers Killed in August 6 Helicopter Crash Given Posthumous Promotions: "Hightest Mark of Respect"

President John Mahama has announced posthumous promotions for the three armed forces personnel killed in the August 6 helicopter crash.
The president paid tribute to the soldiers during the state funeral held in their honour on August 15 at the Independence Square.

Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah has been promoted to the rank of Flight Sergeant.
Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala has been promoted to the rank of Wing Commander.
Flying Officer Manin Twum-Ampadu has been promoted to the rank of Flight Lieutenant.
Mahama said these promotions were much more than symbolic gestures.
“They represent the rightful place these officers have earned in our republic’s roll of honour, and the benefits due their families will be reflected in these new ranks.”
Fund to support children of crash victims
Mahama also announced the establishment of a Children’s Support Fund to cater for the children of the eight victims of the helicopter crash.
The president said Stanbic Bank had provided an initial seed capital of GHS500,000.
He expects the fund to cover the education of the victims’ children from primary school through to the university level.
He also assured that the fund would be sustained through annual public reporting and would include channels for contributions from the public and international partners.
The other victims in the crash were Defence Minister Dr Edward Omane Boamah, Environment Minister Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, former Obuasi East parliamentary candidate Samuel Aboagye, Deputy National Security Coordinator Limuna Muniru and National Democratic Congress Vice Chairman Dr Samuel Sarpong.
The officials were flying from Accra to Obuasi for the launch of the Responsible Cooperative Mining and Skills Development Programme when the aircraft went down in a forested area.

Hadiatu, the widow of the Minister of Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation, was among the mourners at the solemn final funeral rites for six of the eight victims of the tragic Ghana Armed Forces helicopter crash in Adansi Akrofuom on Wednesday, August 6, 2025.

Mohammed’s wife, accompanied by her mother and other family members, drew quiet admiration from many in attendance.
Despite her grief, she carried herself with remarkable composure, maintaining a strong and dignified presence throughout the proceedings.
Anala's wife pays tribute
